Home Security Tips
KD Locksmiths recommend these home security tips to avoid break-ins and burglary.
If you move home consider changing all outside door locks.
Your front door should be fitted with a BS 3621 mortice lock.
Side and back doors - ideally fit a five lever BS 3621 mortise lock together with top and bottom key operated bolts.
Fit suitable locks to top and bottom of french windows/patio doors.
Fit window locks to ground floor and upstairs windows.
Don't leave your house keys in obvious places, for example under the doormat, burglars know where to look first!
Do lock all your doors and windows when you go out.
Do not make ladders available to burglars.
Ensure your garden shed is locked, and keep tools out of sight, burglars will use your tools to gain access to your house.
If you have a passageway at the side or back of your home fit a lockable high gate to prevent a burglar having access to the back of your home.
When going out for the evening ensure your curtains are closed and leave a light on in both the lounge and a bedroom.
If you go out and have a burglar alarm, always make sure you activate it before you leave as many insurance companies will refuse to pay out if you are burgled and you did not activate an alarm.
Don’t leave your curtains and blinds closed during the day as this will attract burglars.
Make sure you cancel your milk and paper deliveries if you go on holiday.
Ask a neighbour to look after your home and remove post or newspapers showing in your letterbox while you are away.
If you go on holiday mow your lawn before you leave.
Think about having your glass upgraded to laminated, as it is incredibly difficult to smash.
To deter burglars mark your belongings with an ultraviolet marker pen.
Consider adding a restrictor to the inside of your letterbox as this will prevent burglars reaching through to open the door.
